Carrier Services DS3
What is a DS3 Circuit?
A DS3 circuit is high-speed telecom digital path providing bandwidth of 45Mbps delivered over fiber optic or coax cables, and is generally used by governments and large business organizations to connect to the Internet. The circuit is comprised of a local access loop (for data transport between a customer location and an Internet gateway) and an Internet port (for data transit into the Internet gateway). It is an excellent choice for entities having hundreds or even thousands of users accessing the Internet.
In common usage, the term “DS3″ is used interchangeably with “T3″, however, T3 historically has been associated more with voice traffic. T3 is a Bell System term for a digital carrier facility used for transmission of data through the telephone hierarchy. In North America, T3 service is a digital channel which communicates at approximately 45 Mbps, or 28 T1 lines.
DS3 is a term more associated with Internet service and data traffic. A T-3 / DS-3 line actually consists of 672 individual channels, each of which supports 64 kbps, that is capable of carrying data at 44,736,000 bits-per-second (44.7 Mbps).
DS3 circuits are used by businesses to provide reliable, dedicated connectivity for Internet access as well as other applications including email, file sharing, web hosting, data backup, video, or VPN access. A DS3 line is of higher quality service compared to cable or DSL, because of higher bandwidth speeds and a Service Level Agreement which guarantees performance, uptime, and repair. A DS3 SLA ensures 99.99% uptime.
